Self improvement is not easy, whether it be improving your health by eating better, improving your physique by exercising, or improving your speech by practicing speech therapy techniques.
Let’s use speech therapy for this example. Regardless of what speech therapy someone has taken, it will require work, and lots of it. I know we live in a world where we want everything to happen in an instant, whether it be weight loss or control over your speech. Well, if life were that easy, it might be boring.
People who stutter are no different. Some think they can get “fluent”, or gain control of their speech, in all aspects of their lives in a matter of days, or even weeks. Regardless of the length of time of your program, whether it be 3 days or 3 weeks, the real work will begin when you go back home, to the real world. In a closed environment, it may seem really easy to practice techniques with other members of the same program. That’s not the hard part. That comes when you attempt to incorporate your technique into the real world, with friends and family who are not members of the program, just members of your life.
Setting realistic expectations of ourselves will help with this transition. Don’t beat yourself up because you didn’t use your technique in this situation or that. Instead, praise yourself for even having the courage to work on your speech. We are all dealt different cards in life, but it’s what we do with our hand that will define us.
