Spinning the various aspects of technology

Let’s start with the basics first.  The word eSIM stands for embedded SIM and is downloadable either from a carrier app or a QR code provided by the carrier.

A physical SIM is one that you need to get from a retail location or order online.

One of the major benefits of using an eSIM for your mobile service is security. If your phone is lost or stolen, your lock screen password or code (hopefully you have one) can prevent someone else from using your phone.

If, however, you have a physical SIM card in that same password protected phone, they can take out your SIM card and use your service in another device.  Depending on the service you have, this can result in unauthorised charges as a result of excess usage.

If your phone has an eSIM, and it is password protected, then your mobile service is safe from others using it.  You can also easily transfer your service to a new phone with an eSIM versus having to go out and get a physical SIM card, or wait for one to be shipped out.

Whirlpool Forums in Australia have a page with more information about eSIMs.  Lots of carriers around the world offer eSIMs now so always a good idea to check with them, especially if you’re considering buying the iPhone Air, which is an eSIM only device.
