I heard this song driving down to the recent Australian Speak Easy Conference (ASEA) and it immediately inspired me as it seemed so relevant to my message of acceptance for people who stutter.
Some of the lyrics which seem to correlate with my speech related goals:
“You can be amazing, you can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug. You can be the outcast…or you can start speaking up…but I wonder what would happen if you say what you wanna say and let the words fall out…and since your history of silence won’t do you any good, did you think it would? Let your words be anything but empty, why don’t you tell them the truth?”
My personal speech goal is to say what I want to say, when I want to say it, regardless of how the words come out. These lyrics resonate with how I have felt in the past and even how I currently feel.
Music has always inspired me, maybe it’s because I (along with most people who stutter but not all) don’t stutter when I sing. Growing up, music was my comfort zone, a place where I can listen, sing along, and not be judged. I think this song should be the theme for any upcoming stuttering related conference.
“Say what you want to say and let the words fall out.”
