Acceptance of oneself can apply to many different areas of your life. For me, it’s my stutter. I’ve arrived at a level of acceptance which has no fear or shame for any speaking situation. My speech goals have evolved over the years from the holy grail of fluency to now just saying what I want to say, when I want to say it, regardless of how the words come out. This was an important step for me in gaining self-acceptance.
Fluent people aren’t fluent one hundred percent of the time, shouldn’t we have the same right to be disfluent as them? It’s great to have tools to help with your speech, and for me one of those tools has been self-acceptance. This has helped eliminate the shame I would feel if I wasn’t able to get the words out.
I think there may even be different levels of self-acceptance and will try to explain my theory in an upcoming post.
For now, my message (and possible upcoming workshop idea) is Accept Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself.
