Spinning the various aspects of technology

Yesterday, Apple introduced their first mobile phone, dubbed the iPhone. They introduced the phone though the scheduled release date is not for another 6 months. It is unusual for Apple to introduce something which is not readily available the same day, though this may have to do with their agreement with Cingular, who is the first carrier to be offering the device.

Apple’s stock price spiked yesterday as a result, and RIM’s stock price dropped. I don’t understand what one has to do with the other. This is not a “BlackBerry killer” as some in the wireless world have been waiting for, and will continue to wait. The iPhone is a consumer oriented device, and without a keyboard (no matter how good the virtual keyboard is), I doubt any BlackBerry user would convert.

That said, Apple does have a loyal following and will most likely sell a good number of these devices. It looks to be a great phone, PDA, video iPod, web browser, with the Apple OS, but I don’t know if it will deter the faithful BlackBerry users away just yet.
