The sign says Restaurant Cafeteria, and if you didn’t know it was really called La Isla, you might just miss it walking by on Washington Street in Hoboken, New Jersey. In case you can’t find it in the picture, it’s between the Cingular store and the Express Deli.
La Isla is a little, and I mean little, restaurant with great Cuban food. The place itself has only but 7 tables, if that many, which can seat approx. 25 people. There are an additional 10 – 15 stools to sit at the bar area as well, should you not, or cannot, wait for a table.
The food is authentic and home made, with great empanadas, roasted chicken, pernil, and of course the classic white rice and black beans combo. They also have daily specials during the week. Be warned, however, that if you arrive after 7pm, or sometimes earlier, most of the specials are already gone, though the regular menu is just as delicious. Their website is www.laislarestaurant.com.
