Spinning the various aspects of technology

In Canada, for those unfamiliar, our mobile phones do not provide free nationwide long distance on regular calling plans. This is unlike in the States where all of the major carriers offer free nationwide long distance, and roaming. I can make a mobile call from New Jersey to Florida, or be in either state, and all calls are considered local.

Prepaid cards seem to be the only viable solution for making long distance calls from your mobile phone in Canada, unless of course you would prefer to pay the higher rates charged by your wireless carrier. One card I have found to be quite good is the President’s Choice prepaid long distance card. Here are a few key benefits of this card:

  • Flat rate of 4.3 cents per minute to call Canada or US
  • Toll free 866 access number, accessible from Canada or US
  • Valid for 6 months from last refill date
  • Can refill (top up) online, and even set up automatic top ups
  • Top up extends expiration date to make it a rolling 6 months
  • Uses Bell Canada network for reliable sound quality

I have actually programmed the access number, calling card number, and phone number into some of my contacts in my BlackBerry. Most phones support the ability to add Pauses and additional numbers for a contact, though the length of numbers allowed will vary by the mobile phone. Another great reason to get a BlackBerry!
