October 22 is designated as International Stuttering Awareness Day. This day was created to bring awareness of stuttering to the public. Stuttering does not mean someone is nervous, unintelligent, or unsure of what they want to say. It simply means the words will take a little bit longer to come out, so please be patient. Although it may seem helpful to finish one’s sentence, especially if they are struggling with a word, most people who stutter would rather finish it on their own. Maintain eye contact throughout a block with the person who stutters.
