Spinning the various aspects of technology

In the past 24 hours, stuttering has been discussed in two articles in the NY Times as well as a radio show, WOR 710. Prior to that, I can’t seem to recall such attention placed on stuttering.

It seems that stuttering never gets the attention it deserves. Perhaps it’s due to the small percentage of people that actually stutter, which is less than one percent. Maybe it’s because stuttering is not a fatal illness.

While stuttering may not technically be fatal, it can still cripple the life of a person who stutters. Some children never talk in school for fear of stuttering. As the radio talk show stated yesterday, “stuttering is one of the only disabilities left which is still ok to make fun of.”

I think this has to do with education of what stuttering is and what it’s not. Simply put, it is not caused by nervousness and does not mean someone is less intelligent. More detailed information about stuttering can be found on the National Stuttering Association’s website at www.westutter.org.
